Ambassadors

Shane Dorian- professional surfer

Shane Dorian, Kona-California’s Ambassador, is a surf legend and pillar of the Kailua-Kona community. He graduated from Konawaena High School in 1990 and spent the early part of his surfing career pushing the sport to new heights with contemporaries Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and the Irons Brothers.  Shane’s recent accomplishments include the 2010 XXL Awards Male Performer of the Year and the 2008 XXL Ride of the Year. Giving back to the community that raised him has been important to Shane, and his “Keiki Surf Classic” has become an institution. Currently in its 15th year, the contest gives aspiring young surfers from Kailua-Kona the chance to interact with their surfing idols and raise money for local charities. Despite having an international career that has included a starring role in Hollywood film “In God’s Hands,” Shane continues to call Kailua-Kona home, and lives on the slopes of Hualalai with his wife and his two children overlooking the breaks he grew up surfing.  For more information about Shane, check him out at billabong.com

Bree Wee- professional triathlete

Bree was the second person in her family (only after her older sister) to ever graduate from college. The life experience and doors college opens are something she believes every one deserves to know in this life. Her heart had a passion for teaching over seas in Central America to under privileged children during her studies. Two weeks after college graduation she was recruited to teach at Kahakai Elementary where the children of Hawaii stole her heart. Being able to see the youth of Hawaii grow into adults then go off to college provides so much hope to the keiki following in their foot steps. The Kona California Scholarship excites her with the magnitude of doors it can open for Hawaii highschoolers. Other than watching the youth of Hawaii go on to tackle dreams Bree enjoys kids and sand.  Please visit Bree’s blog at http://breeweehawaii.blogspot.com/

Rob Machado- professional surfer

Rob Machado is Kona-California Scholarship’s ambassador on the Mainland. Known for his successful run on the ASP tour as well as his stylish free surfing, Rob is a true legend and one of the most well known surfers of all time. Out of the water, Rob is committed to supporting charitable causes, including the Rob Machado Foundation, which raises money for environmental programs through an annual golf tournament, as well as the Rob Machado Surf Experience, a 16 and under surf contest in Cardiff, California. Rob has made an impact on the youth of Kona as a favorite surfer of many goofy foot groms and a regular visitor to Shane Dorian’s Keiki Surf Classic.  For more information on Rob’s foundation, please visit http://robmachadofoundation.org/
